Thailand Honeymoon Itinerary

🔄 Updated 7 Jul 2026

The short version: land in Bangkok and give it 2 easy nights — a rooftop dinner, a couples' spa, one temple morning. Fly an hour north to Chiang Mai for 3 nights of boutique stays, cool mornings and a private Thai cooking date. Then fly south to a romantic island for 4–5 nights of beaches, longtail sunsets and doing very little. Not sure which island? See the island choices below.

Nights 1–2: Bangkok, a glamorous start

Ease into the trip with a short, dressed-up city stay. Bangkok is at its most romantic after dark — a rooftop dinner with the skyline lit up, a slow river cruise, an evening spa treatment to shake off the flight. Keep it to two nights and stay near the BTS/MRT (Sukhumvit or Riverside) so you're not stuck in traffic.

  • Night 1: arrive, settle in, and book a couples' treatment — a Thai massage or a spa evening to reset. See our Thai massage & spa guide for what to expect and how to pick a good one
  • Day 2: one relaxed temple morning (Wat Pho and Wat Arun by river) before the heat, then a rooftop dinner at sunset. Many hotels have a couples' spa on-site
  • Night 2: a romantic dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya — dinner, the lit temples gliding past, and an easy early night before your flight

Where to stay in Bangkok

For a honeymoon, a riverside or high-floor room with a view is worth the splurge. Stay near a BTS/MRT to skip the traffic:

The Bangkok splurge: a spa night

If you only book one indulgence in the city, make it a couples' spa. Bangkok's spa scene ranges from affordable hour-long Thai massages to full evening rituals with a private suite for two. It's the gentlest way to land after a long-haul flight. See our Thai massage & spa guide for the difference between styles and what a fair price looks like.

Nights 3–5: Chiang Mai, boutique & slow

A one-hour flight lands you somewhere completely different: cooler air, a moated old town, hundreds of temples and mountains on the doorstep. Chiang Mai is where honeymoons slow down — boutique stays, garden pools, and a private cooking date make it the heart of the trip. See getting around Thailand for the flight-vs-train call.

  • Day 3: settle into a boutique stay, wander the old-town temples on foot in the cool of the morning, and end with sunset over the city from Doi Suthep
  • Day 4: a private Thai cooking class — many run couples' or small-group sessions with a market visit first, then dinner you made together back at the farm
  • Day 5: a slow nature day — a waterfall, a coffee-farm café (Chiang Mai is Thailand's coffee capital), then the night bazaar for browsing hand-in-hand

Where to stay in Chiang Mai

The old town keeps you walking distance from temples and cafés; for a honeymoon, look for a boutique with a garden pool.

Nights 6–10: your dreamy island

Finish where honeymoons are meant to end — by the sea, doing very little. Fly south and pick the island that matches your mood: Railay or Phi Phi off Krabi for dramatic limestone cliffs, Koh Samui or Koh Yao Noi for calm and spa villas, or an over-water villa if you want the full splurge. See our island-hopping guide and quietest islands to choose.

  • For drama (Krabi): base near Ao Nang or car-free Railay, take a private longtail to a hidden bay at sunset, and hop out to Phi Phi or the Hong Islands one day. Compare with Phuket vs Krabi; book tours on Krabi tours & tickets
  • For calm (the Gulf): Koh Samui pairs spa villas with easy dinners; Koh Yao Noi and the quiet islands stay slow and low-key. See Koh Samui vs Koh Phangan and Samui tours & tickets
  • Whichever you pick: keep two nights truly free — a spa morning, a seafood dinner on the sand, a private sunset cruise, and no alarm

Where to stay on the island

For Krabi, Ao Nang for dining or Railay for quiet cliffs; for the Gulf, Samui's beaches for spa resorts.

Splurge vs save, and how to reshape it

A honeymoon is worth a little indulgence, but you don't have to splurge on everything. Here's how to shift the route by budget, length and mood without losing the romance.

💡 Know before you go (for a honeymoon)

🗓️
Aim for Nov–Mar to dodge the rain

Cool, dry season is best countrywide and kindest to a beach finish. May–Oct is wetter — if you travel then, favour the Gulf islands (Samui, Phangan), which often stay drier than the Andaman coast.

🌦️
Match the island to the season

Nov–Apr suits Krabi, Railay and Phi Phi; May–Oct leans to the Gulf. Flipping the island leg by month is the single best way to protect your beach days.

✈️
Book the two domestic flights early

Bangkok–Chiang Mai and the flight south are cheap booked weeks ahead and pricey last-minute. Mention it's a honeymoon at hotels — many throw in a room upgrade or a small surprise.

💸
Splurge on one thing, not everything

A private-pool villa, a sunset longtail or a couples' spa lands far more than spreading the budget thin. See our Thailand budget guide to plan the balance.

FAQ

How many days do you need for a Thailand honeymoon?

10 to 12 days is the sweet spot. It gives you a short, glamorous city start, three slow days in Chiang Mai, and a proper 4–5 night island finish without rushing — as long as you connect the legs with short domestic flights rather than long overland drives.

Which island is best for a honeymoon in Thailand?

It depends on your mood. For dramatic limestone scenery and longtail sunsets, choose Railay or Phi Phi off Krabi. For calm, spa villas and easy dinners, choose Koh Samui or the quieter Koh Yao Noi. Match the island to the season too — the Andaman coast is best Nov–Apr, the Gulf May–Oct.

How much does a Thailand honeymoon cost?

Excluding international flights, a comfortable mid-range honeymoon runs roughly US$120–250 a day for two, with luxury resorts, private-pool villas and spa days pushing it higher. The island stay, domestic flights and any private tours are the main variables. See our Thailand budget guide for a full breakdown.

When is the best time for a Thailand honeymoon?

November to March (cool, dry season) is best across all three regions and kindest to the beach finish. April is very hot but includes Songkran. In the May–October wet season, favour the Gulf islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) over the Andaman coast for drier weather.

Should we skip Bangkok on a honeymoon?

You can, but two nights is worth keeping. Bangkok is at its most romantic after dark — a rooftop dinner, a river cruise, a couples' spa to recover from the flight — and it's an easy, glamorous way to start before the slower days in Chiang Mai and on the island.
