Short answer: For families and a walkable beach stay on Kata Beach (Kata Yai); for a smaller, quieter cove pick Kata Noi; for a long, wide and calmer beach choose Karon to the north; and for budget, stay inland or up the hill and walk or ride down to the sand in a few minutes.

FAQ

Kata or Karon — which should I stay at?

Kata is more compact, with restaurants, cafés and the beach all within walking distance — good for first-timers and families. Karon has a longer, wider beach that feels quieter and more spread out, suiting those who like long beach walks and a calmer pace. The two sit side by side, a few minutes apart by car.

How is Kata Noi different from Kata?

Kata Noi is a small bay just south of Kata Yai — quieter and more private, with only a handful of resorts and fewer shops. In the monsoon it gets waves good for surfing. It suits travelers who want a quiet base but can still drive over to Kata Yai easily.

Are Kata and Karon good for families?

Yes — both beaches are calm with gentler water in the high season (Nov–Apr), with family-friendly resorts and plenty of dining, and they are quieter than Patong. For nightlife, Patong is about a 15–20 minute drive away.
