Short answer: Koh Samet is an island near Bangkok, reached by ferry from Ban Phe. For the busiest all-in-one beach stay at Hat Sai Kaew; for somewhere quieter but still walkable to shops pick Ao Phai; for a curved bay with direct boats choose Ao Wong Deuan; and for sunsets and upscale resorts, Ao Prao on the west coast (the island is a national park with an entry fee).

FAQ

Which Koh Samet beach is best for a first visit?

Hat Sai Kaew is best for a first visit — the main beach with long white sand, rooms for every budget, restaurants, bars and watersports, and easy boats from Ban Phe. For somewhere quieter but still walkable to shops, pick Ao Phai just along the coast.

Is there a national park fee for Koh Samet?

Yes — Koh Samet is inside Khao Laem Ya–Mu Ko Samet National Park, and the fee is collected when you arrive on the island (foreigners pay more than Thais, children half price). It is a one-time entry charge, so keep the receipt and bring cash.

Which bay is quiet and good for sunset?

Ao Prao on the west coast is the only bay facing the sunset — quiet and private, with a few mid-range to upscale resorts, ideal for couples and a real rest. Most other beaches face east, better for sunrises.
