Where to stay in
Krabi Town

A lot of people assume Krabi means beaches, but the actual town sits inland on the Krabi River and has no coastline. The famous beaches like Ao Nang are a 20 to 30 minute drive away. So most travellers stay in town for one reason: it is the easiest place to catch onward transport. You have the bus terminal, Chao Fah Pier with morning boats to Koh Lanta and the Phi Phi Islands, and you are closer to the airport than Ao Nang is. The other draw is price. Rooms in town are far cheaper than on the coast, with hostel dorms from around ฿300 and private air-conditioned rooms from around ฿400. At night the weekend walking street (Friday to Sunday) sells cheap, good food along the river, and there are the black crab statues, Wat Kaew Korawaram temple, and small coffee shops to wander between. Worth knowing: the town is quiet, with none of the Patong-style nightlife, and many places are older buildings or guesthouses with thin walls. If your plan is to be on the sand every day, stay in Ao Nang or on an island instead. But for a single night before a boat, or for a budget trip, town is much better value.

FAQ

Is it easy to reach Ao Nang beach and catch island boats from Krabi Town?

Boats are easy, but beaches need a ride. The town is not on the coast. For Ao Nang, white songthaews run regularly from the town centre and take about 20 to 30 minutes, or you can take a Grab. Boats to Koh Lanta, the Phi Phi Islands, and other islands leave directly from Chao Fah Pier in town, mostly in the morning, so staying in town the night before is handy because you can simply walk to the pier.

What is there to do in Krabi Town, and who is it best for?

It suits people catching onward transport, budget travellers, and anyone who wants to see a real town rather than a beach resort strip. Good things to do include the riverside weekend walking street (Friday to Sunday) with cheap, tasty food, photographing the black crab statues that symbolise the town, visiting Wat Kaew Korawaram temple, and sitting in the small coffee shops. Travellers who want lively nightlife or to be on the sand every day will likely find the town too quiet.

Are rooms in Krabi Town really cheaper than on the coast, and are they noisy?

Yes, genuinely cheaper. Hostel dorms in town start around ฿300 and private air-conditioned rooms from around ฿400, clearly less than comparable stays on Ao Nang beach. As for noise, it depends on the location and the building. Many places are guesthouses or older buildings with weak soundproofing, and rooms on a main road or near the walking street will catch evening noise from Friday to Sunday. If you're a light sleeper, ask for an interior or upper-floor room when you book.
