FAQ

What season is best along the Mekong?

The cool season (Nov–Feb) brings cool air and mist, especially in Chiang Khan, while Sam Phan Bok in Ubon shows best in the dry season (Feb–May) when the water drops; in the rains the river is full and green but some rapids submerge — pick by what you want to see.

Where and when are the Naga fireballs?

They are seen around Nong Khai and nearby Mekong areas at the end of Buddhist Lent (around October) — balls of light that rise from the river, drawing big crowds each year, so riverside rooms fill fast and you should book well ahead.

Can I combine several Mekong provinces?

Yes — the Mekong route links up over a long stretch, for example Loei (Chiang Khan) – Nong Khai – Nakhon Phanom – Mukdahan – Ubon, so you can drive along the river for several days, ideal for a road trip lover who likes river views and small towns.
