Some dining rooms are older than our parents — Le Normandie has had its kitchen running since 1958, on the top floor of the tower wing of the Mandarin Oriental hotel in riverside Bang Rak, and it's considered Thailand's first French fine-dining restaurant. For nearly seven decades this has been the landmark for anyone who wants to eat serious French food in Bangkok. But the most exciting chapter only just began in September 2025, when Anne-Sophie Pic, the female chef with the most MICHELIN stars in the world, flew in to take personal charge of this room, with a redesigned interior by Humbert & Poyet. The MICHELIN Guide Thailand responded almost instantly — the 2026 edition announced the restaurant's promotion from one star to two, even though Chef Pic had only been in the kitchen for a year. That says a lot about how strongly this kitchen is firing.
The dish everyone talks about first is the Berlingots, small pleated pasta parcels hiding a filling inside — the signature dish Chef Pic carries to every one of her restaurants around the world, and now it has a home on the banks of the Chao Phraya. Another dish worth holding onto is the Lobster dashi with red fruits, lobster in a dashi broth paired with a sweet-tart fruit note you can't quite predict until you taste it. The menu format flexes with the rhythm of your day — a 3-course lunch at THB 4,500++ if you want to try it without committing fully, or a dinner "Voyage" tasting menu of 7 courses at THB 9,000++ that carries you from the first plate through dessert. If you'd rather not commit to a tasting menu, à la carte is available too, with a minimum of 3 dishes per person. As for the setting, it barely needs explaining — the tables sit above the Chao Phraya River, and the evening light hitting the water at half past six is an opening scene that's hard to replicate anywhere else.
This is also a restaurant that keeps genuine European tradition intact. The dress code is spelled out clearly: elegant attire, with men required to wear a jacket at dinner — if you're travelling light and didn't bring one, the restaurant has loaner jackets on hand, and sleeveless shirts are off-limits for men in every case. Another detail worth knowing if you're planning a trip: the restaurant closes annually for maintenance, and in 2026 that falls on 6–28 July, so shift your dates around it before you book. For anyone already staying at the Mandarin Oriental, there's a more romantic route than the BTS — take the hotel's boat to the Oriental Pier and walk into the dining room the way guests did back in 1958. History, a living legendary chef, and the country's main river, all in one meal — no wonder the second star arrived this fast.

Budget to prepare: a 3-course lunch at THB 4,500++ per person, or the dinner "Voyage" menu of 7 courses at THB 9,000++ per person (plus service charge and tax), or order à la carte with a minimum of 3 dishes per person. Book through the SevenRooms system on the Mandarin Oriental website — the detail you can't afford to miss is the 48-hour cancellation policy. Cancel later than that and you're charged THB 2,250 per person for lunch, or THB 4,500 per person for dinner. Groups of 6 or more can't book online and must call +66 2 659 9000 or email the hotel directly. Any allergies or dietary restrictions also need to be flagged 48 hours in advance.
The restaurant is open Wednesday–Sunday, lunch 12:00–15:30 (last order 13:30 — arrive later than that and you'll miss it), dinner 18:30–23:30 (last order 21:00), and mark this in red: 6–28 July 2026 the restaurant closes for its annual renovation. To get there, take the BTS to Saphan Taksin and walk about 10 minutes into the hotel, or if you're a hotel guest, the boat to Oriental Pier is a more comfortable option. The dress code is serious: at dinner, men must wear a jacket (loaner jackets available), and sleeveless shirts are not allowed. We'd recommend booking the 18:30 seating so you can watch the evening light turn into night lights over the Chao Phraya during your meal.
