If you're going to tell the story of Gaa, you have to start with the chef — Garima Arora is the first Indian woman in history to earn a MICHELIN star, and it didn't take her a decade to get there. The restaurant opened in 2017, and the first star arrived in 2018 — within a single year of opening. Her path before that explains everything: she came up through the kitchens of Noma in Copenhagen and Gaggan in Bangkok, two of the most boundary-pushing kitchens in the food world. So when she opened her own place, what came out wasn't the Indian restaurant you'd expect — it's Indian technique and spirit engaged seriously with Thai ingredients. MICHELIN awarded the second star in the 2024 guide, and 2026 still holds both stars. Along the way she also picked up the MICHELIN Guide Thailand Young Chef Award 2022.
The dish everyone talks about first is the charcoal-grilled durian called "Tandoori Story," served with roti. It might raise an eyebrow the first time you hear it, but this is the dish that made the whole city remember the name Gaa, because it sums up the restaurant's whole approach — an extreme Thai ingredient like durian meeting Indian tandoor-style charcoal-grilling technique, finished with roti that bridges the two cultures. Another signature is unripe jackfruit with pickles served alongside roti, which turns a humble ingredient into a dish people fly to Bangkok for. And for vegetarians, there's a full tasting menu built specifically for them — not just meat pulled off the regular menu and relabeled. Given how strong vegetarian culture is at the roots of Indian food, this is an edge that's hard for other fine-dining restaurants in Bangkok to match.
The restaurant itself has a story too. Gaa originally sat in the Lang Suan neighbourhood before moving into a renovated old Thai house at 46/1 Sukhumvit 53 in Thonglor in 2021. Walking into a house and eating a two-star meal feels distinctly different from sitting in a hotel dining room — warmer, more intimate, and it fits a menu that plays with memory and a sense of home. One detail fewer people know: on weekends there's an afternoon tea for THB 1,800, open from noon, a smaller door in for anyone who wants a taste of chef Garima's cooking without committing to the full course. The restaurant is also kind to families, with a kids' menu for ages 7 and up at THB 2,000 — rare to find at this level.
Gaa
Budget for the main Gaa Experience course is THB 6,200++ per person (raised from THB 5,200, effective 1 July 2026), the vegetarian course is THB 5,200++, and the weekend afternoon tea is THB 1,800. Booking goes through TableCheck and is prepaid. The good news is you don't need to fight for a table months out the way you do at some other two-star restaurants — open the booking page and you'll usually find tables free within the next few weeks. But know the rules: free cancellation up to 48 hours before your meal (24 hours for afternoon tea), a no-show is charged the full menu price, allergies or dietary requests need at least 24 hours' notice, and if you want to bring your own wine, corkage is THB 3,000 (waived if you buy from their cellar instead).
Dinner is open daily from 17:30; Saturday and Sunday add lunch and afternoon tea from noon. Getting there is easy — take the BTS to Thong Lo, then walk into Sukhumvit Soi 53 for about 7 minutes. There's no strict dress code, just dress appropriately for the occasion. Worth repeating: this is a tasting-menu restaurant that only seats guests with a reservation — walking up to the door won't get you a table.
