Talk about Chon Buri souvenirs and you can't avoid khao lam (grilled sticky rice in bamboo) from Nong Mon, and if you had to point to the shop with the proudest story in the area, Khao Lam Mae Khai Toon Klao is the first name locals think of. This shop has been grilling khao lam for more than 70 years, sitting along Sukhumvit Road across from the PTT petrol station in Nong Mon, in Saen Suk sub-district. The word "Toon Klao" in the shop's name wasn't picked at random — it comes from a real event around 1985, when Mae Khai, the first-generation owner, was chosen to present khao lam to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. The Royal Household Bureau later sent a letter along with a commemorative medal to the shop, and that honour has been kept and passed down through the family to the current generation, Pi Kaew — Sirikanya Ngamjantharathip — who took over running the family's grilling kiln and steered the shop to Bib Gourmand recognition from the MICHELIN Guide two years running (2025-2026)
What won MICHELIN over isn't any kind of luxury — it's the honest commitment to the traditional method. The khao lam here uses fresh coconut milk, grilled over real charcoal fires day by day, and once you crack open the bamboo tube you get the fragrance of bamboo mixed with charcoal smoke that steamed khao lam or factory-made imitations simply can't match. Choices include both white and black sticky rice, in long and short bamboo tubes depending on how hungry you are. The most popular fillings are taro and black bean, available every day, while custard filling is a weekly rarity made only on Saturdays and Sundays — anyone set on trying it needs to time their visit right. And the price is friendly: sold by the tube, one person spends under THB 200 and can carry home several tubes
One thing worth knowing before you go: Nong Mon has been Chon Buri's souvenir district for generations, sitting right along the route before you reach Bang Saen. Bangkok residents driving out to Bang Saen beach have long made a habit of stopping to pick up khao lam on the way home. There are dozens of khao lam shops in this area, but MICHELIN choosing to crown Mae Khai Toon Klao with a Bib Gourmand more or less confirms what people in Saen Suk already knew — this shop is the real deal. Freshly grilled khao lam sells out fast almost every day; arrive late and you might just be staring at an empty kiln. So if you're already planning a trip to Bang Saen, work a morning stop at Nong Mon into your route — you'll get a souvenir to take home and a taste straight from the warm kiln, which is when khao lam tastes best
