Family & kids things
to do in the South

The South with kids isn't only beaches and islands — on a scorching or rainy day there's still plenty of cool, indoor fun for little ones. Phuket makes the natural base, with real variety on a single island: a budget fish-tunnel aquarium, a huge all-day water park, and an open-air community with an indoor adventure playground to run off some energy. Over on the gulf side, Songkhla has an air-conditioned aquarium for escaping the heat before you walk on to Samila Beach. We've picked only places that have a full review on the site, grouped them by province so they're easy to scan, and noted which ages each suits, what you can do, roughly what it costs and where to stay nearby.

1

Phuket Aquarium

An indoor aquarium out at Cape Panwa, run by the marine research centre, where the highlight for kids is walking under a fish tunnel with sharks and rays gliding overhead, plus tanks of clownfish, sea turtles and colourful reef fish up close. It suits toddlers through primary age since it's a short visit that matches a small child's attention span, and Thai entry is around ฿50 for adults, ฿20 for children, free for kids under 108cm. Trick: it's a very cheap escape from heat or rain, and an easy stop before or after a boat from the Cape Panwa piers.

Andamanda Phuket

A large themed water park in Kathu in the middle of the island, about 15–20 minutes from Patong, split into five zones based on Andaman Sea legends with 25 rides — from thrill slides for older kids and teens to a shallow lagoon and a little-kids' zone they can play in safely. It fills a whole day in one place, with walk-up entry around ฿1,800 for adults, ฿1,200 for children (91–121cm) and free for kids under 90cm. Trick: entry is steep, so set aside a full day to make it worth it, book online ahead for a better rate than the gate, and keep young children in life vests with an adult right beside them.

Blue Tree Phuket

An open-air community in Cherng Talay near Bang Tao Beach and the Laguna area, bundling an indoor kids' adventure playground, a forest park, a skate park and restaurants and cafes in one place — somewhere kids can play safely while parents sit with a coffee. It suits kindergarten age and up who can climb, and walking into the grounds, forest and skate park is free, while the indoor adventure playground charges separately per person. Honest note: the old water lagoon and cliff jump are permanently closed, so come for the playground and open space rather than for swimming. Trick: check current prices and playground slots on the Blue Tree Phuket page before you go, as they change with the season.

Songkhla Aquarium

An air-conditioned indoor aquarium at the tip of Laem Son On, gathering freshwater, brackish and saltwater life in one place, where the favourite with kids is the underwater tunnel — walking beneath a big tank as sharks, rays and colourful fish glide overhead. It suits toddlers through primary age at an easy strolling pace, with Thai entry around ฿100 for adults, ฿50 for children and students, and ฿200 for foreigners. Trick: it's a good spot to duck out of the heat, and afterwards nearby Samila Beach is an easy walk on for the kids to run around and photograph the mermaid statue.

FAQ

Where should I take toddlers and little kids in the South?

For little ones, stick to easy walking and cool indoor spots with no climbing or swimming: the Phuket Aquarium or the Songkhla Aquarium both let them walk under a fish tunnel, and each is short enough for a small child and easy on the wallet. Blue Tree Phuket has an indoor playground and open space to burn off energy. Andamanda works too, but keep them in the shallow lagoon zone, in life vests, with an adult right beside them.

Where can I take the kids on a rainy day?

On a wet day the safest bets are the indoor aquariums — both the Phuket Aquarium and the Songkhla Aquarium are air-conditioned buildings, so you can wander no matter how hard it rains, and they're cheap. Blue Tree Phuket has an indoor adventure playground that works even in the rain. Andamanda water park is still fine in light rain since everyone is wet anyway, though staff close the slides during thunderstorms for safety. Check the forecast before you set out and keep an indoor backup in mind.

What time of year is best for a family trip to the South?

On the Andaman side, Phuket is at its best in the dry season (Nov–Apr) with clear skies and calm sea for walking and swimming, lining up neatly with the year-end and summer school breaks. In the rainy months (May–Oct) showers come in bursts, but indoor spots like the aquarium and the Blue Tree playground are fine any day. The gulf side around Songkhla runs on a different clock, with its heaviest rain late in the year (Nov–Dec) — and the indoor Songkhla Aquarium is fine year-round. Pick your timing by which coast you're heading to.

How should I plan 2–3 family days in Phuket?

Base yourself in Phuket and alternate indoor and outdoor spots to dodge the sun. On day one hit the Andamanda water park in Kathu for a full day in the water; on day two, when midday sun is strongest, duck into the Phuket Aquarium at Cape Panwa for the fish tunnel, then head to a beach in the cooler late afternoon. With a third day, let the kids run around gently at Blue Tree near Bang Tao, which has an indoor playground and forest park while parents rest at a cafe. It's all on one island with short drives, and hiring a car with a child seat is the smoothest way around.
