7.6Highlights and sights around Phatthalung — nature, city and culture
A freshwater lake and well-known wetland. Take a boat out to see the red lotus covering the water in the morning, plus flocks of waterbirds and water buffalo that wade in to graze across the lake. It's the first image that comes to mind when you think of Phatthalung.
A limestone mountain in the middle of town with a hole straight through near its peak, which has become the province's symbol. Climb the stairs for views over the town and the surrounding rice fields. A troop of monkeys greets you at the foot of the hill.
A beach on Songkhla Lake where locals come to sit in the breeze and eat seafood by the water. There are piers and pavilions for watching the sunset — an easy spot to relax close to town.
Old houses and markets in town that still carry an old-world feel. The former governor's residence is open to walk through, along with wooden shophouses and local food shops nearby.
Phatthalung is a major birthplace of nang talung shadow puppetry and Manora dance in the South. You can visit the homes of puppet masters and Manora troupes to watch the puppets being carved and the dancing — folk arts that are still very much alive.
Green rice fields around town and water buffalo raised along the lake are everyday scenes you'll see across the province. Several spots set up rice paddies for photos and let you taste local Sangyod rice.

Phatthalung's signature food — real local spots, rounded up and ranked
Rice tossed with budu sauce, finely shredded vegetables, toasted coconut, dried shrimp, and wild flowers — sour, salty, and sweet in one plate. A light breakfast that people in Phatthalung eat regularly.
Bold local southern dishes. Gaeng tai pla is a rich, salty, spicy fish-innards curry, while khua kling is fragrant dry-fried minced pork with curry paste — eaten with hot rice and a big pile of fresh raw vegetables.
A popular breakfast — fresh rice noodles topped with bold southern curry, nam prik, and gaeng tai pla, with all the raw vegetables you want. The well-known shops in town open early and draw a queue.
On Songkhla Lake there's brackish-water fish and fresh prawns. The shops along Lampam Beach boil, stir-fry, and deep-fry it, while fried pla duk ra (salted catfish) is a local specialty that pairs well with rice porridge.
The province's red heirloom rice, registered as a geographical indication. Cooked, it's fragrant and soft; it's sold as raw grain and turned into sweets and souvenirs.
Curry shops line up trays of dishes ladled over a single plate of rice — gaeng leuang, gaeng tai pla, spicy stir-fries, and khua kling, all bold and properly southern. Found all over town.
Southern tea shops open from morning to late night. Roti is crisp outside and soft inside, eaten with condensed milk or curry, alongside hot pulled tea (cha chak) — a breakfast and snack for sitting and chatting.
Around town and along the fields are new cafes where you can sit looking out at the rice paddies and Khao Ok Thalu. Many brew fresh coffee and make local sweets — a good spot to relax and take photos.
